My technique - napkin decoupage -pros and cons

My main technique at this moment is decoupage, particularly napkin decoupage (or serviette decoupage). In this post I am going to explain why I like this technique. As all decorations techniques, napkin decoupage has pros and cons.

For me the most important advantages are:
1. Paper napkins have fantastic designs
2. Paper napkins are very thin. Usually paper napkins have 3 layers, in decoupage we used only first printed layer.
3. Because they are very thin, paper napkins easily blend into a background.
4. I like the attention to details, very important for me is good quality and good finish – working with paper napkins it is not to hard to achieve this goal
5. Paper napkins are cheap

Main disadvantages arising from the use of napkins decoupage:
1. Paper napkins easily tear
2. Paper napkins easily get wrinkled while they are glued

With napkins you can decorate almost everything –metal, wood, glass, plastic, paper, fabric, ceramic, walls - the possibilities are endless. The only restriction is your own imagination.
If you want to know more about my technique -let me know -I could write more.

  1. I've tried decorating several shuttles with napkins. I think they'r beautiful, but I'd like to reduce the wrinkling. I tried spraying them with acrylic sealer as I do with my scrapbooking paper, but that didn't seem to help. Do you have any tips for me?

  9. I'm new to using napkins and was wondering whether it matters what colour the items is your putting the napkins on as I've seen some items normally used in decopatch which are papermache they are all grey in colour, do I need to paint everything white or can I use napkins straight on the surface?

  11. I am new to decoupage and have just finished my first item, although the napkin wrinkled on me I carried on with it anyway as I was cared to peel it off incase I wasted it completley, but wrinkles and all it looks really nice! What I was wondering about with the napkins,I seen a nice verse I would like to use but some of the words are on the patterned pitted part of the napkin, the border bit if that makes sense, if I were to use this, how can I make sure the pitting doesn't show up, as the rest of the image is smooth

    1. decoupagedesignsusa.com is a great place to get top quality decoupage products at very reasonable prices with equally reasonable shipping. It's run by a wonderful, very helpful decoupage artist, and there's something new there almost every day. Go there, also google Patti Elhoff or Upcycling with Decoupage. She has youtube videos about various techniques and is a master artist as well, and also very helpful.

  13. I am really struggling to use napkins for decoupage because they are so porous . I find myself ending up with a soggy mess !! It I use a small amount of the decoupage glue they don't adhere well, too much and I often tear the paper. I am fine with decoupage papers however the napkin designs are so beautiful. I have been working on a wooden chest of drawers with the napkins however didn't really enjoy doing it because of the difficulties I have mentioned. Any advice would be very welcome. Thank you,
